“Have you tried a stretching program?” I asked my client. “Stretching improves flexibility.”

She said, “I’ve tried to find some beginner stretching routines to help with the pain and improve my flexibility, but they’re all too advanced and too difficult— I’m literally not flexible enough to do the stretching programs that are designed to improve my flexibility!”
I was surprised when I heard this. I didn’t realize it was so difficult to find a flexibility program that actually worked for older adults...
...and then I started hearing these same stories from more of my clients who were in their 50s, 60s and 70s...
...so I tried to find an existing exercise program that could help them. Turns out, my clients were right —all the programs I found for improving flexibility were too difficult for most older adults.

I believe it’s my duty to do whatever I can to help my clients reduce or eliminate their pain and get back to a better life... so I pretty much knew at this point that I would have to create my own flexibility program, designed specifically for older adults who were very inflexible.

So I did what I always do first—I dove into the scientific and medical research related to regaining flexibility for older adults, and I found some encouraging information.
There were multiple research studies and papers that showed that the right kind of stretching program can significantly improve flexibility in older adults.
These are quotes from just a few:

As much as I didn’t want to give my clients more bad news, I had to tell them that I found two things in the research that are serious concerns for older adults who are inflexible.

It turns out that as bad as it is to have declining flexibility, joint pain, stiffness and difficulty performing day-to-day tasks and movements, there are actually 2 much more serious, HIDDEN DANGERS of being inflexible as an older adult...
HIDDEN DANGER #1
Inflexibility Can Lead To Balance Problems,
Which Can Lead To Dangerous Falls,
Which Can Lead To Serious Injuries
This is from a study in 2010 entitled The Relationship Between Range of Movement, Flexibility, and Balance in the Elderly:
" This study investigate whether decreased passive lower extremity range of motion (ROM) and flexibility contribute to falls in the elderly . Eighteen subjects aged 60 years and older participated in the study. The subjects were divided into 2 categories, fallers and nonfallers.
Both subject groups underwent ROM and flexibility testing of the lower extremity. A statistically significant decrease of ROM of hip extension, internal rotation, abduction, ankle dorsiflexion, and gastrocnemius length was found in the faller group as compared with the nonfaller group. The findings of this study suggest a link between decreased range of motion [flexibility] and falls in the elderly and that addressing range of motion [flexibility] deficits may decrease potential falls.
In plain English, it's saying that they noticed significantly less flexibility in the group of people who had already fallen once, prior to the study, and that this suggests that inflexibility is likely to lead to balance problems, which can lead to falls, which can lead to very serious injuries, and in elderly people, sometimes even death!
If you’re over 40, and you’ve experienced a decrease in your flexibility, PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY :
Several studies have shown that impaired flexibility can lead to balance problems and falls, which can lead to more severe health issues and conditions - both physical and psychological, and can even start a  dangerous downward health spiral.

These studies found that:

Aging causes a significant decline in muscle strength, called sarcopenia...

Which can lead to decreased flexibility and balance problems...
Which leads to falls, injuries and the fear of falling...

Which leads to you doing less physical activity (because you’re afraid of falling)...

Which leads to further decreases in muscle strength and flexibility, and leads to more balance problems (because these things all deteriorate without regular physical activity)

Which leads to more falls and injuries (because your balance is worse than it’s ever been)

Which can lead to serious incapacity, infirmity, or even death.

This quote comes from a 2014 balance and falling study entitled: Analysis of Core Stability Exercise Effect on the Physical and Psychological Function of Elderly Women Vulnerable to Falls during Obstacle Negotiation:

“Individuals with a history of falls have fears of repeated falls , depression, and anxiety, all of which lead to decreased physical activities . These negative experiences result in reduced physical capacity in terms of muscular strength, bodily flexibility, and coordination, rendering the affected elderly even more susceptible to falls in a vicious cycle .”

Inflexibility May Be A Signal That
Your Arteries Are Clogged!
In my research, I also discovered something quite alarming.

Several large scientific studies have proven that a less flexible body is often a sign that your arteries may be clogged and that you are at risk for heart disease, or a heart attack.

"This study demonstrated that poor upper extremity and trunk flexibility were associated with characteristics of early onset of atherosclerosis.
This quote is from a study in 2009 entitled Poor Trunk Flexibility Is Associated With Arterial Stiffening:

“The present study investigated a new aspect of flexibility. Using a cross-sectional study design, we tested the hypothesis that a less flexible body would have arterial stiffening. These findings suggest that flexibility may be a predictor of arterial stiffening , independent of other components of fitness.”

“In addition to removing obstacles that can contribute to falling, such as slippery surfaces, unstable footwear, loose rugs, faulty stair rails, and uneven or steep stairs, flexibility is key to maintaining good balance and helping prevent falls.
An article entitled Benefits Of Flexibility Exercises on the Harvard Medical School website concluded:

Activities that lengthen and stretch muscles can help you prevent injuries, back pain, and balance problems . Activities such as yoga combine stretching and relaxation and also improve balance, a wonderful combination.”
This is a quote from an article on WashingtonArthritisRheumors.com:

There is evidence to suggest that a stretching program for the front hip muscles can improve walking speed and stride length. This will result in improved walking function and offer greater control, which decreases the risk of falls due to a lack of balance . Stride length is also very important in decreasing your risk of falling. The more distance between your legs while walking (i.e.,longer step), the greater balance you can achieve. Therefore, it is important to improve the ability of your legs to take longer steps by maintaining flexibility in the muscles of your legs

This is the second hidden danger we discussed above. Here’s how flexibility plays a role...
While improving your flexibility should definitely not be the only thing you do to prevent heart disease, research has shown that stretching to increase flexibility can help prevent and even reverse arterial stiffness and atherosclerosis (heart disease).

2 reasons:
Most stretching programs that are designed to improve flexibility DON’T WORK, because they’re not based on scientific evidence
The BIG reason most flexibility programs don’t work for most people is they aren’t based on scientific research.
The reason for that is: most doctors, physical therapists, and other health professionals don’t have the time, or the inclination to dig through medical and scientific research, carefully design a flexibility stretching program that precisely follows the conclusions of that research, and is also easy, gentle and fast, and then test it with real people in the real world to make sure it works.
But, I DO have the time… for ALL of that.
Finding solutions for people’s pain and injuries, and designing exercise programs that actually work... is all I do .
It’s my full-time job.
So, I have all the time I need to carefully go through the research…
And design the RIGHT kind of stretching program…
That follows the recommendations of the research…
And then test that program with real clients until I KNOW it works .
And I’ve been doing that for 25+ years now.
Even if a flexibility program is based on science, most  older adults won't do it on a consistent basis (and therefore won't get any of the results they want)
You may have tried a stretching program for improving your flexibility that actually was based on scientific research. There are some out there. And it’s a great start that these programs are based on the latest research…
But unfortunately, it’s not enough.
There’s still human psychology to contend with.
The fact is that, even with a research-based exercise program, most people still won’t get the results they want, because they won’t do the exercise program on a consistent basis.
This is because most flexibility programs (research-based, or not) are:
Too difficult to learn
Too difficult to do
Too aggressive and advanced for older adults
Too hard on your joints
Too time-consuming
Too complicated
Too intense, scary and risky for older adults
Why is this?
Because the people who design these programs haven’t spent over two decades doing this, like I have, and they haven’t learned the psychology behind why people do or don’t do new exercise programs!
So, while it’s a step in the right direction to have an exercise program that’s based on research, it also needs to be designed in a way that almost guarantees that most people will actually do it on a consistent basis.
Because doing it on a consistent basis is the only way you’ll ever get the results you want.

This flexibility program is more comprehensive  than other similar programs
Another BIG reason many flexibility programs don’t work is they aren’t comprehensive enough.

Most doctors, physical therapists or health professionals who design flexibility programs don’t take the time to carefully review all of the latest research on flexibility related to older adults, and they end up designing a program that is too narrowly focused—not nearly comprehensive enough.

These programs typically look something like this:
To improve your flexibility, these programs will usually only give you one or two routines, in a standing position and/or floor position, and will focus only on hips, back, glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders.

In my experience, and based on what the latest research says, THIS IS NOT ENOUGH.

My new, 15-minute flexibility stretching program, that I’m going to show you in just a minute, looks like this:
You can see right away that this is much more comprehensive, because it targets more body parts. It includes a self-assessment package and 4 different flexibility stretching routines, each to be performed in different body positions.

Why is my program so much more comprehensive?

Because I designed it using the latest scientific and medical research, which has shown that flexibility is more easily and quickly restored when you target multiple areas of the body at once. This is because the different parts of the body are interconnected and interdependent, which means they work together and support each other when you make most movements, so improving the flexibility of one area helps another, and so on.

If you’re worried that because my program is so comprehensive, that it will also be difficult, complicated or time-consuming, DON’T WORRY.

In spite of the fact that it’s so comprehensive, the program I’m going to show you takes only 15 minutes (or less) each day to complete, and is so easy and so low-impact that virtually any person can do it, regardless of age, weight, fitness level, current flexibility, or experience with exercise.
This flexibility program is more customizable  than other similar programs
My program is also more customizable, and this is important because not everyone has the same flexibility issues.

For example, some people are very inflexible in their lower body and this makes it difficult for them to get down onto the floor to do stretches. Some people are inflexible in their hips, back and core and this could make it painful for them to stand for a long period of time. So in the program, I included flexibility stretching routines that you can do in different body positions, like sitting, standing, on the floor, etc. So, if you can’t get onto the floor, you can try the sitting routine, or if you can’t sit for long, you can try the standing routine, and so on. This means  you can definitely do this program, no matter what your particular flexibility issue or limitation currently is.

And, the first thing you’ll do in my program is go through a Self-Assessment process which includes a short video, a manual, and an assessment sheet that guide you through the whole process carefully, step-by-step. After you do the self-assessment, you’ll know which areas of your body to focus on, and which routine will be the best for you to start with.

All of this built-in customization is there to make sure you can get started with this program, then continue to do it on a consistent basis, and get the greatest results and benefits with the least amount of effort and time.

Designing a program with customization like this takes more time and effort and planning on my part, but it’s worth it because you get a program that actually works, and can actually deliver all the benefits I talked about above.
This exercise program is based on scientific and medical research .
Doctors and physical therapists are busy. They don’t always have the time, and it’s not really their job to carefully review and analyze all of the latest and relevant scientific and medical research related to flexibility.

I DO have the time… because finding solutions like this and designing exercise programs that help people get out of pain is my full-time job .
And, after 25+ years of doing this full-time, I’ve learned that stretching and exercise programs that are based on conclusions from scientific and medical research produce much better results for most people.
